(Open e-Learning, e-Portfolio and Online Resources for Learning in English)

Minister of Higher Education, Y.B Dato’ Mustapa Muhamed held a meeting with the new students at the Sultan Iskandar Hall before launching two new educational programmes which is UTM e-Portfolio and UTM Online Resources for Learning in English when he visited UTM on the 14th of July, 2007. Both products/programmes managed by Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), UTM.

The e-Portfolio is the first of its kind digitally in Malaysia, the system was developed in order to help students to plan their study more efficiently. The students who recently registered were the first group of student that implements the portfolio system which was developed by the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and Centre of Information Technology and Communication (CICT), UTM.

e-Portfolio is an online compilation of documents that is flexible and is based on artifact evidences of which students are directly involved in a continuous reflection process towards their own learning, the progress of their achievement on knowledge, technical and generic skills as well as their personal, academic and career development planning. UTM is the first university in the country that has developed an e-Portfolio system for its student to record their academic progress and learning reflection. The project was started in 2005 as one of the tools to monitor and assess the acquirement of UTM Graduate Attributes among its students.

As part of its ongoing effort to enhance the English language communication skills of its students, UTM has created the UTM Online Resources For Learning in English for all undergraduates and postgraduate students. The programme is managed by the English Language Unit (Unit Bahasa Inggeris), Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL).


Online Resources for Learning in English offer resources for self-access language learning covering study skills, academic reading, writing and listening, grammar, links to English language learning sites and other resources for learning in English. The service allows students to choose what they want to learn at their own pace. The service is offered free to all students in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Students will be able to gain access to the resources through the university’s e-Learning website at http://elearning.utm.my/

Skudai, 10th July: UTM made history by becoming the first Malaysian Public University to implement the ‘Open Access Policy’ for its intellectual materials. Known as the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Institutional Repository (UTM-IR), it will collect and provide full text access to its scholarly publications on the web. At this moment UTM-IR consists of three major open access system: Open e-Journal (managed by Centre/Unit/Faculty), Open e-Learning (managed by CTL and CICT) and UTM-IR (managed by Perpustakaan Sultanah Zanariah). Open access means that access is allowed without restriction to scholarly publication in digital and online format for free. Through this policy, all intellectual materials from UTM can be accessed even by outsiders all around the world to be used as revisions, research works and innovations.
